African National Congress (ANC) councillor Zain Kaldini in Eldorado Park says drug peddlers should be charged with treason.
The councillor has called on the government to amend the law when dealing with drug dealers.

Speaking on the Forum @8, the ANC councillor says the fight against drug peddling in the area is far from over because police officials are on the payroll of some of the drug dealers.

In 2013, one of the residents and founder of ‘Sharing Without Shame’ Dereleen James wrote a touching letter to President Jacob Zuma urging him to help locals with the drug problem facing the community.
The plea prompted President Zuma to visit the area a month later.
During his visit, Zuma promised to improve the arrest rate of dealers and drug lords in the area.

James says although a lot of drug dens have been closed down, the justice system remains to be a challenge as some of the drug dealer who were arrested have been released.
She has called on the government to communicate with locals more effectively.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor in the area, Peter Rafferty says one of the biggest challenges is educating locals about drug policies.
He says many schools in the area are familiar with some of the policies.
Rafferty adds that until drug dealers are severely punished, the drug problem will continue to ruin innocent lives.

However, Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila has dismissed allegations that police officers are working together with these drug lords.
According to Malila, accusations against SAPS members are unfounded and baseless.
He has called on the community members to come forward with any information about those dealing in drugs.
